Angel M. Ramos, Ph.D.

Born among the rats and roaches in the slums of New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Dr. Ramos overcame poverty, a single-parent family, and hearing loss to become the first person in his family to attend college. Upon graduation from college, the only job the hearing world would give him was that of a taxicab driver. With a strong belief that "everything happens for a reason" and "God never gives you anything you can't handle," Dr. Ramos went from being a New York City taxicab driver to

become the only Deaf Hispanic individual to receive a doctorate from Gallaudet University, a Fulbright scholar, a superintendent of schools for the Deaf, and an international presenter.

Dr. Ramos has extensive experience as an educator in the field of Deaf education. He previously served as Superintendent of the Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind, Sequoia Deaf School (formerly Sequoia School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing), and the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf. He is currently the principal at the Hawai'i School for the Deaf and the Blind. He has also served on numerous boards and commissions, including the NTID National Advisory Group (NAG), the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the Task Force on Minority Deaf, and the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities, among others.

His extensive experience has made him a highly regarded international presenter in many countries, including China, Taiwan, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia, where he has shared insights on the educational needs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) students.

During the Deaf President Now (DPN) movement, Dr. Ramos served as the Chairperson of the DPN Fund and was a member of the DPN Council. These experiences provided him with a unique, firsthand perspective that he effectively shares with readers in Triumph of the Spirit. Dr. Ramos travels extensively, teaching audiences about the three major lessons of the DPN movement—Community 1st, Attitude, and Partners. He has given numerous presentations about the DPN movement throughout the country, including the University of Arizona, Florida State University at Jacksonville, Purdue University, SUNY at Suffolk, Bloomsburg University, Kapiʻolani Community College, PaHners, Antelope Community College, California State University at Northridge, California State University at Fresno, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and many more.
